Creative Bunkbed Rooms Maximize Space for Family Living

How do you fit big, fun-loving families into homes with limited sleeping areas? The solution, according to local designer Nancy Maison, is simple: bunk beds.

If you’re suddenly picturing sleepaway camp or kiddie decor, however—think again. Maison, owner of A Great Find in El Jebel, envisions bunk rooms with contemporary, sophisticated appeal and luxe Western accents. Take the Snowmass Village condo she recently designed for a family that wanted to maximize the usable space in a narrow bedroom. “We fit two twins on top, two full beds on bottom, and a lot of storage with a built-in closet and drawers,” Maison says. “We utilized every inch of space in there. My husband does custom log furniture, and he made the bunk beds.”

Another home, a vacation property in Old Snowmass, was outfitted with a bunk room for the owners’ older children or guests. “They wanted the look to have a mountain flavor but not too rustic,” she adds. “We went with gorgeous geometric Pendleton bedding, and shades of gray throughout for a more contemporary feel.”
